As the study permit is valid for only 1 year, you will have to apply for renewal annually.

Why do I have to apply for it annually? The study residence permit is issued based on your studies in Italy, since every year you enrol in a different academic year, the study permit validity period is renewed only if you prove to still be enrolled in university.

Residency (residenza) is not always mandatory, but it brings with it several benefits that we can let you discover.

But what is it exactly? It is the act of registering into the population registry of the area in which you live. The competent authority for the registration is the Municipality (Comune) you are currently living in.

For whom is mandatory? It is mandatory for EU citizens in Italy who are planning to stay here for more than 3 months.

What is our suggestion? We advise all of you (EU and Non-EU citizens) to register you as resident in Italy if you are planning to stay in our country after graduation, since the same registration will be useful for numerous other documentary procedure in Italy if you are planning to stay here after your studies.

Let's have an example: you have just applied for residence permit renewal, and you are holding your postal office receipt. You are then invited to attend an important conference in Spain, but, as you should know, you cannot travel to EU countries with an expired permit and only the postal receipt.

  PLEASE NOTE: from December 2024 – following issuance of Law-Decree 145/2024  (converted by Law 187/2024) and the modifications to art. 28 of Immigration Law (T.U Immigrazione - D.lg 286) to be able to request family cohesion OR reunification while holding a residence permit for study reasons, it is now necessary that the first migrant has already been regularly in Italy for at least two (2) years.

You have just obtained your residency (residenza) in Italy, and would like to apply for your first Italian ID card certifying your new residency on the Italian territory.

Why should I apply? The procedure is quite short, and you would be able to obtain an official document certifying your residency in Italy and giving you the possibility to access many public online service. Shortly, it would simplify some part of your life, and you should not be thinking about its renewal for about 10 years.

P.S. the Italian ID card (CIE) does not substitutes your residence permit nor passport.
