Incoming Students

You have arrived to Italy. It may feel like you are almost done with bureaucratic requirements. Unfortunately, we must tell you that your journey has just started!

First of all, you surely need a tax code (codice fiscale).

What is a Codice Fiscale? It is an alphanumeric code that allows Italian Authorities to identify each of us. Based on your personal information the competent office (Agenzia delle Entrate) will issue you the code – this code will be yours forever.

Why is this important? You need it to register with the Italian Health care system, apply for Residenza, or may need it to sign a rental contract.

How can we help you?

• By booking your appointment to the Agenzia delle Entrate where you will be able to go in person (1 e-mail)

Health coverage is one of the first things you need to take care of.

Why? Not only because it is essential, but also because without it you will not be able to apply for the residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).

What is our suggestion? We strongly recommend you register with the Italian Health Care System; but why?

• It gives you the right to get the same medical services provided to Italian citizens,
• Granted access to ER, Surgeries, Rehabilitation, etc.
• Prescriptions and the allocation of a GP (general practitioner) whom you can consult should you need to have any tests.

How can we help you?

• By providing you the required forms and checking the documents you need to prepare (2 e-mails)
• By assisting you with the online application (if you live in Milan) or the booking of the in- person appointment at the competent office (providing you with suggestions on how to proceed at the counter) (1 e-mail)

And then it comes the residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) application to be submitted within 8 days from your arrival. Obtaining your electronic "permesso di soggiorno" is a must.

What is a residence permit? It is a document that allows you to legally stay in Italy for your studies and it has a validity of 1 year. It substitutes the Study visa you used to enter Italy; therefore, you should only take care of renewing the study residence permit every year, since the Visa should not be renewed once expired. The first residence permit is issued based on the validity of your study Visa.

And how can I use it?  During its validity the residence permit allows you to travel in Italy and outside of Italy – in and outside the Schengen Area.

You need one or more of your family members to reach you. If your family member is a non-EU citizen, you need to proceed with the reunification process through a dedicated immigration procedure for Family Reunification or Family Cohesion.

  PLEASE NOTE: from December 2024 – following issuance of Law-Decree 145/2024  (converted by Law 187/2024) and the modifications to art. 28 of Immigration Law (T.U Immigrazione - D.lg 286) to be able to request family cohesion OR reunification while holding a residence permit for study reasons, it is now necessary that the first migrant has already been regularly in Italy for at least two (2) years.

• By helping your family with the filling in of the residence permit application (appointment in person)
